Franz Joseph Haydn sometimes used his music to send subtle messages .
In 1772 Haydn s boss planned to keep everyone working longer than usual, but the musicians missed their families. During the last section of the "farewell"symphony, Haydn had the musicians leave one by one until only he and another musician remained. Haydn s boss let the musicians return home the next day.
The "surprise" Symphony offers another musical twist: In the middle of the second movement, a sudden, loud chord wakes everybody up. Written for his first London trip, Haydn claimed he wanted "to surprise the public with something new."
